Extra help for people with disability or medical needs

What can I bid for if I have a disability or medical need?

People who need help to bid can nominate another person to bid for them, anyone can ask for more help by contacting homes@kennet tel 01380 724911

If you or someone living in your home needs to move because of disability or medical needs you will be able to bid for properties by joining the Kennet Housing Register. If you need to move urgently you will be given a priority card and will be told what type of property you can move to and will be able to get help for any adaptations you need. If you chose a property that is not suitable you will not be able to get further help to adapt the home to suit your needs.

What help can I get for adaptations?

If you want to stay in your home or have moved to a new home that needs adaptations you can get help from Kennet Care and Repair tel 01380 735333. They can provide free assessments and advice about repairs, improvements and adaptations that may be needed for either home owners or tenants who live in the Kennet district.

Kennet Care and Repair will help you to apply for funding if you cannot afford to pay for all the work yourself and will help to organise any building works. They are funded and supported by the District and County Councils and other partnership agencies and also provide a Handihelp Service to help carry out small repair jobs around your home.

Tenants of Housing Associations may be able to get help for adaptations from their landlord, they should tell their landlord about their needs.

What sort of funding for adaptations is available?

If you need minor adaptations which will cost less than £1000 you may be entitled to funding from the Wiltshire County Council Department of Adult and Community Care Services tel 01380 730055

Tenants of Housing Associations may be able get funding from their landlords to help pay for adaptations and will often be able to get help from their landlords to apply for further funding or advice about what sort of adaptations could be provided.

The District Councils Department of Environmental Health and Protection Services tel 01380 724911 can provide a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £25000. They will need to check that the proposed works are necessary and appropriate to meet your needs and reasonable and practicable depending on the age and condition of the property. The amount of grant you can get is always means tested and can be topped up by funding from your housing association.

Never start adaptations that you can’t afford because you will not normally be awarded a grant for works completed before receiving approval.
