applying for housing

how can I join the Kennet housing register?

You can join the Kennet Housing Register by completing an application form

  • download one from the website - follow this link
  • pick up one at Kennet District Council or a housing association office
  • ask for one to be sent to you from homes@kennet follow this link

who can join the Kennet Housing Register?

Anyone over the age of 16 can join the Kennet Housing Register unless they are ineligible for housing because of immigration controls or because they would be unsuitable to be a tenant because of unacceptable behaviour

how is an application assessed?

Each application is carefully assessed to decide what priority band it should be in and what sort of property is needed:

band A

Urgent need

 bracket

already living in Kennet or having a good reason to need to live in the Kennet area

band B

Genuine need

band C

No housing need or living outside the Kennet area

People in band A will be given a priority card which enables them to be considered for housing before others

A home visit and specialist advice may be needed to make a proper assessment

how long will I wait for a home?

It depends on how often the type of property you want becomes available, how many other people are bidding, how long you’ve been waiting, whether you have a priority card and if you are already a housing association tenant. You can find out how likely you are to be made an offer by looking at Recent Lets (link)

When we receive many bids for the same property we will offer it to the person in band A who has been waiting longest or has had the longest tenancy unless the property has been advertised as having a priority card threshold.

what is a priority card threshold?

When a property is going to be very popular we allow fair competition from everyone who has a housing need by applying a priority card threshold. If we receive more bids than the threshold number we will offer the property to the person in band A or B who has been waiting the longest or who has had the longest tenancy. People in band A will only get priority if there are fewer bidders than the priority card threshold number.
